One of the most famous monuments of Turkish and Islamic art, the mosque is visited by all who come to Istanbul and gains their admiration. This imperial mosque is an example of classical Turkish architecture, and it is the only mosque that was originally built with six minarets. It is surrounded by other important edifices of Istanbul, built at earlier ages. Istanbul is viewed best from the sea and the mosque is part of this magnificent scenery. Although it is popularly known as the Blue Mosque, its real name is Sultan Ahmet Mosque. Befitting his original profession, its architect Mehmet Aga decorated the interior fastidiously like a jeweler.

Built between 1609-1616, the mosque used to be part of a large complex, including a covered bazaar, Turkish baths, public kitchens, a hospital, schools, a caravanserai, and the mausoleum of Sultan Ahmet. Some of these social and cultural buildings have not survived to our day. The architect was a student of Sinan, the greatest architect of classical Turkish architecture. He applied a plan used previously by his master, but on a larger scale. The main entrance to Sultan Ahmet Mosque is on the Hippodrome side. There is an outer courtyard, and the inner courtyard and the edifice itself are elevated. From the gate opening to the inner courtyard one can view the domes, rising above one another in perfect harmony, over the symbolic ablution fountain in the middle and the surrounding porticoes. There are three entrances to the mosque interior. The wealthy and colorful vista inside created by the paintings, tiles and stained glass complements the exterior view.

The interior has a centralized plan; the main and side domes rise on four large columns that support broad and pointed arches. The walls of the galleries surrounding the three sides of the interior chamber are decorated by over 20,000 exquisite Iznik tiles. The areas above the tiles and the inside of the domes are decorated with paintwork. The blue of the paintwork, which gives the mosque its name, was not the color of the decorations originally; they were painted blue during later restorations. During the last renovation, completed in 1990, the darker blue color of the interior decorations painted as its original light colors. The floor is covered by carpets, as in all mosques. Next to the mihrab (niche aligned towards Mecca) opposite the main entrance, there is a marble minber (pulpit) with exquisite marble work. On the other side is the sultan's loge (box) in the form of a balcony. The 260 windows flood with light the interior space, which is covered by a dome 23.5 m in diameter and 43 m high. The small market building, repaired and reconstructed in recent years, is situated to the east of the mosque, and the single-domed mausoleum of Sultan Ahmet and the medrese (religious school) building are to the north, on the Hagia Sophia side. In summer months light and sound shows are organized in the park here.

Sultan Ahmet Mosque occupies a focal point in city tours, together with the numerous monumental buildings and museums in the vicinity. The minarets of the mosque are classical examples of Turkish architecture. The balconies are reached by spiral stairs. It is from these balconies that five times a day the believers are called to prayer - in our day using loudspeakers. The domes and the minarets are covered by lead, and at the top of the minarets there are standards made of gold-plated copper. Master craftsmen repair these coverings very skillfully when needed. Islam requires all Muslims to pray five times a day. When the believers hear the call to prayer from the minarets, they perform their ablutions (washing) and then pray. The noon prayer on Fridays and the prayers on other important holidays are performed in the mosques collectively, but other prayers can be performed anywhere. In the communal prayers performed in the mosque, the imam takes the lead and he chants verses from the Koran. The areas of prayer for men and women are separate. In the central area only men are allowed to pray, while women take their places either behind them or in the galleries. It is a characteristic of classical Turkish mosques that even in the most crowded day, the majority of the congregation can easily see the mihrab.

Taking Istanbul Airport Taxis from the airport into the city

From the Istanbul Airport you will definitely want to catch an Istanbul Airport taxi to the City Center. However, you should be forewarned about the taxi frauds that are commonplace in the Turkish Capital. Rather than wish you had read about these in advance it is prudent to learn everything about them prior to entering the country.

What mostly happens is that in case you give the Istanbul airport taxi drivers a Lira note, perhaps a 50 note, the drivers can skillfully replace the note with a 5 Lira note, since they are about the same color, while fuming that you had made an error. For most first timers, they will naturally doubt themselves, take the small note back and replace it with another 50 without knowing what has transpired. Most people have thus ended up paying more Liras, mostly 45 more, equivalent to 30 dollars or 22 English Pounds.

As such you should never trust them too much and you should always double-check the amount prior to handing it to your taxi driver. Since the distance has the drivers ignoring the meter for most of the time, be concerned and ask your driver to make good use of the taximeter. Drivers will cheat you at the earliest opportunity and thus prior to taking an Istanbul Airport taxi to the City Center you should get a map so that they don’t make a short distance a very long one just for you to pay more.

If you can, make sure you understand some Turkish as most of them hardly speak any English. Always avoid asking for your driver’s advice since it is always a risk in Istanbul. To avoid unpleasantness just let your hotel arrange an Istanbul Airport taxi for you to the Istanbul central area and give you someone to hold liable and to complain to once the service provided is not as wished. That said, most taxi drivers in Istanbul are honest but you must always be vigilant.

Istanbul Airport Facilities

Istanbul Airport facilities are in constant improvement to serve the ever rising number of passengers, with new constructions and renovations taking place currently right within the airport’s terminals.

1. Terminal Transfers

Escalator walkways as well as travelators connect the terminals. Driving directions from the center of Istanbul can be seen through the motorways while there are signposts all over towards the airport.

2. Finance and Communications

The airport has banks, bureau de change, ATMs and post offices, both in the domestic and international terminals.

3. Eating, Shopping and Drinking

With so many snack bars, restaurants, bars, cafes and fast food places open 24/7, the airport has boosted this with 24-hour shopping facilities within the airport such as duty-free shops and authentic bazaars within the International Terminal.

4. Conferences and Facilities for Business Meetings

The airport has conference centers that can hold a certain maximum number of delegates located in the International terminal, such as the Tepe Conference Hall for 70, Akfen for 200 or about 250 while standing, and the F. Ergokmen Hall holding 50 delegates. With 5 CIP Lounges located in the International Terminals, passengers are provided with photocopying, fax and Internet facilities with some remaining open 24/7. The Millennium Lounge offers business class travelers the desired comfort.

Istanbul Airport Transportation

From the Istanbul Airport to the City Center one can travel using different means. This is the airport that appeared in James Bond’s From Russia with Love while it was still known as Yesilkoy Airport.

A light rail service exists between Istanbul Airport and Aksaray. This line runs through some main areas of the part of the city on the European Thrace, together with the terminal for the intercity bus. The light rail service takes one to Aksaray in about 35 minutes with the one-way cost being Euros 0.75.

The Airport’s Shuttle service is also a good choice. It’s operated by the Havas, one of the main backbones of Turkey’s ground handling enterprises. All these buses run after every half hour to such areas as Taksim Square, Kozyatagi, Aksaray, Yenikapi and Bakirkoy, and after every two hours to Etiler Akmerkez.

On the other hand, the Airport also has fast ferry services that run in the Bakirkoy terminal, connecting to Kadikoy and Bostanci. The Havas buses also offer services between the Istanbul Airport and the terminal offering fast ferry services as per the ferries arrivals and departures. You can also take the Municipality bus that runs to Kozyatagi, Etiler and Taksim. While being a slower alternative, it is cheaper and thus affordable. A car ride can also take one to the City Center, via D-100’s International road, the coastal road and the Trans-European Motorway.

Since Istanbul’s traffic is much heavier today, it is advisable to travel to the city center using public transport such as Tram, Sea, Tunnel, Metro and Bus. Public transport in the capital is much more reasonable, comfortable and frequent and a trip of 15 kilometers should not cost one more than what a taxi’s minute does. In case you need a 100 percent pleasantness, comfort, assurance and safe private way of traveling to the city center, consider a Mercedes Benz minivan which is only 40 percent more than the cost of a taxi ride.
